Student and Staff Member Recognized at Georgia Department of Education Board Meeting

Harley and Denise Student and Advisor of the year

MOULTRIE, GA – On April 30, 2026,  two of Colquitt County's own were recognized for their extraordinary resilience and dedicated service at the Georgia Department of Education Board Meeting.  Harley Walker, a senior at Colquitt County High School, is the Federal Programs Student of the Year under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act.  Joining her in the spotlight is Denise Van Dyke Pope, MSW, who is the Homeless Liaison of the Year in Georgia.

A Story of Resilience: Harley Walker

Harley Walker's journey to being named Student of the Year is a testament to the power of perseverance.  After a challenging upbringing and the loss of her primary caregiver, her great-grandmother, Harley faced a period of significant hardship and abuse.  Her life took a pivotal turn in August 2025 when her FFA advisors and teachers intervened, helping her transition to a safe and supportive home.

Despite these obstacles, Harley has excelled as an active member of the Colquitt County, Georgia, and National FFA Organizations.  With the support of Denise Pope and the "Fill the Gap" program, Harley was able to continue her passion for showing livestock.  Her achievements over the past year include:

  • Grand Champion Market Steer at the AGR Cattle Classic in Auburn, Alabama.
  • State Champion in Agricultural Communications.
  • Two-time Area 5 winner in Prepared Public Speaking.
  • Selection as a camp counselor for the state FFA Camp.

"Without her support, I think that I would still be in such a horrible place," Walker stated, referring to Mrs. Pope.  "She has truly helped me lead a normal teenage life for my last year of high school".

Dedicated Service: Denise Van Dyke Pope

Denise Pope's recognition as Homeless Liaison of the Year follows a distinguished 30-year career as a school social worker with Colquitt County Schools.  Though she retired from full-time social work in 2022, she has continued her vital work as the Homeless Liaison and Foster Care Point of Contact—roles she has held since 2005.

Pope is the founder of the "Fill the Gap" program, a collaboration with the Colquitt County United Way that provides essential items to homeless and at-risk students.  Under her leadership, the program provides:

  • 400 weekend snack bags every week to children in need.
  • Essential hygiene supplies and bedding.
  • Services to enhance both the school and home environments for vulnerable youth.

"Making community connections and educating our community on the needs of homeless children and youth have been both challenging but fulfilling," said Pope.  "There is no better feeling than knowing that I have helped a child in some small way".
