The Colquitt County School District provides bus transportation to all eligible students in their school assignment zone who live one and a half miles or more from school and to students with identified special needs. The district's Transportation Department is committed to providing these students with safe, efficient, and reliable transportation service that contributes to their overall academic success.
Each day more than 6870 Students in Colquitt County are transported on approximately 70 buses covering more than 1.5 million miles per year.
- Yellow Flashing Lights on the bus indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and load or unload. This means cars need to slow down and get ready to stop.
- Red Flashing Lights and Stop Signal Arm indicates that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. This tells motorists to stop their cars.
- Side and Rear View Mirrors let the driver know what is going on around them so they can see kids walking up to the bus.
- Emergency Exits. Let’s hope you never have to use them, but just in case, you should always know where the exits are. In a real emergency listen to your driver for instructions.
- Crossing Control Arm is mounted on the front bumper and will swing out when the door is opened. It is designed to keep children from walking close to the front of the bus.
- Danger Zone (front): DANGER ZONE! It’s never safe to walk close to the front of the bus. The bus driver may be sitting up too high to see you. Walk 5 giant steps ahead of the bus before crossing in front of it.
- Danger Zone (sides): DANGER ZONE! Remember never walk close to the side of a school bus. Stay at least 3 giant steps away from the side. You may be in the bus driver’s blind spot—if you are where he/she can’t see you.
- Danger Zone (behind bus): DANGER ZONE! Never walk behind a school bus. The driver will not be able to see you.
- Walking Area: When getting off the bus make sure you walk (not run) three more steps away from the door. This is the best place to be around a bus. Stay away from the bus wheels and watch out for moving cars!
As parents, you are an important part of the total safety awareness program for students who travel to and from school by bus. Students can benefit from learning to become safe pedestrians and passengers.
- Allow enough time in the morning for unhurried, calm school preparation time.
- Prepare as much as possible the night before.
- Have your children wear bright, contrasting colored coats.
- Help your children to leave on time. Allow for weather and plan to arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pickup time.
- Go with your children to the bus stop.
- Tell your children to walk in groups, if possible.
- Please train pets to stay in the yard, away from bus traffic.
- Remind your children to walk on sidewalks or stay out of the street. If they must walk in the street, they should walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as they can.
- Teach your children to stop, look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street.
- Running, games, shoving, or horseplay is too dangerous at the bus stop and around traffic.
- Tell your children to stand 15 feet (NINE GIANT STEPS) away from the street when waiting for the bus.
- When bus arrives students should be standing at the designated stop.
- If anything is dropped during loading or unloading the bus, children tell the bus driver before attempting to retrieve it.
- Encourage your children to secure loose drawstrings or other objects that may get caught in the handrail or door of the bus as they exit.
- If transportation other than the assigned bus is desired, parents are responsible for making other accommodations.
- Twelve feet on either side and 12 feet in front of the bus are considered the DANGER ZONE. This is the area most difficult to SEE children around the school bus. Remind your children about the DANGER ZONE often.
- Instruct your children to STOP and look before hurrying away from the bus as they exit at the end of the day.
- When you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off.
- Any person who enters a public school bus without authorization, or who willfully stops, impedes, delays or detains a public school or activity bus shall be guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor.
- When students are unloading they should not check their mailboxes.
- Give your child a note or follow the school’s procedures if you would like for the child to get off at a stop other than the one they are assigned. The driver isn’t allowed to let a child off at another stop without written permission.
- Be seated immediately, and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
- Obey the driver’s instructions. The driver of a school bus is in complete charge of the passengers while they are aboard.
- Always speak in a quietly manner on the bus so the driver will not be distracted.
- Always be silent when a bus comes to a railroad crossing, so the driver can hear if a train is coming.
- Do not play running games or push and shove at the bus stop.
- Remember that fighting at bus stops, and/or on the way to and from a school bus stop, subjects the student to disciplinary action (to be reported to the school principal).
- Always cross the street in front of the bus.
- Two-lane roadway: When school bust stops for passengers, ALL traffic from both directions must stop.
- Two-lane roadway with a center turn lane: When school bus stops for passengers, ALL traffic from both directions must stop.
