Students Earn Industry Certifications

Project Purpose Hard Hat and Safety Glasses - Decorative

Eleven students at Colquitt County High School have earned industry certifications that make them more employable. These students were part of a program called Project Purpose Get2Work Bootcamp. The Bootcamp was held in March in coordination with Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC), the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce, and the Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority.

Students expressed an interest in the Bootcamp with their high school counselor and were then screened for participation eligibility. The program was designed to prepare graduating seniors to enter the workforce. Once selected for the program, they choose between Hospitality or Manufacturing paths. Each path offered industry training during the school day over five days. Students who chose the Hospitality path received their ServSafe Certification for safe food handling, Soft Skills, Resume Writing, and Conflict Resolution training. The students who chose the Manufacturing path received General Industrial Health and Safety OSHA certification, Industrial Forklift License (Class 6), Industrial Systems training, Soft Skills, Resume Writing, and Conflict Resolution training.

Industry-certified professionals, in partnership with SRTC, taught each path. All courses were offered on the high school campus except for the Forklift and Industrial Systems. Those were done at the SRTC Moultrie and Industrial Drive Campuses. On the last day of the Bootcamp, students and their families were invited to a celebration luncheon. The students were presented with certificates of completion from SRTC Representative Dana Lewis and High School Principal Dan Chappuis. Chamber Director Tommie Beth Willis and Development Authority Representative Anna Ford spoke to the students about how much more marketable they are now with their certifications and training. They each spoke on behalf of the business community about the need for qualified employees to fill open positions. Students were congratulated on earning credentials to distinguish them from other applicants seeking similar jobs.

Project Purpose is a multi-pronged approach to connecting the school district with the business and industry base in the community. The Get2Work Bootcamp is one activity done through Project Purpose throughout the school year. The year will culminate with a Job Fair for senior students seeking employment at Colquitt County High School on April 28, 2023. Interested businesses are encouraged to participate in the job fair.
