2017 EL Program Exit Criteria Changes The changes that will be put in place are due to both new requirements under the ESSA as well as new scaling performed by WIDA forACCESS 2.0.
1. The grades 1-12 exit criteria will no longer include the Literacy sub-score.
Exit will be based solely on achievement of a 5.0 Composite Proficiency Level (CPL). Kindergarten exit criteria will not change this year.
2. Language Assessment Conferences (LAC) to determine exit will no longer be permitted. An ELmust attain the designated exit score (5.0 CPL) to be exited from ESOL. As always, a student who attains that designated score must be exited from ESOL.
2017 ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Score Changes
To meet language demands of college and career readiness standards, WIDA is raising the bar for language proficiency. Students will need to showcase higher language skills in 2016–2017 to achieve the same proficiency level scores (1.0–6.0). This is the result of a process called standard setting. Standard setting determines the student performance required for each proficiency level through a series of decisions made for each grade level by expert panels of teachers as well as district and state English language learner administrators. Standard setting is expected to impact ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 scores in 2017 in the following ways: 1) Some students' scores may go down 2) Fewer students may exit program support
What will this mean for the Colquitt County Schools ESOL program? We expect the number of students in the ESOL program to grow as fewer students exit each year and students remain in the program for more years than in the past.
ACCESS for ELLs Training Annual ACCESS training for all test administrators was held on Wednesday, January 4th from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM in the Central Office Computer lab. All teachers and staff administering the ACCESS for ELLs (paper), ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 (online), and Alternate ACCESS tests completed the relevant training, including tutorials, web-based modules, and quizzes, and received official training certificates from WIDA. Technology Integration for ELs Training 11/1/16 g -ESOL and regular ed classroom teachers attended the Technology Integration for English Learners training on November 1, 2016 from 9 A.M. -3 P.M. in the Curriculum Professional Learning Room #1. The training was presented by Stephen Paine of Dougherty County schools and SWGA RESA. "Señor Paine" presented ways to use a variety of fun websites and apps to teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to English learners. (Grades K-7) Imagine Learning training for people new to Imagine Learning will be Oct 19, 2016 in the Central Office Computer Lab from 8:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. (Make sure you fill out your professional leave forms!) All ten Colquitt County elementary schools and Willie J. Williams Middle School are excited to continue using Imagine Learning for newcomer and struggling English learners this school year. WIDA Differentiation Workshop Sept. 27, 2016
Mr. Adams and three ESOL teachers participated in the workshop "Differentiation for Linguistically Diverse Students" presented by Kira Cunningham, WIDA Professional Development Outreach Specialist. Mrs. Cunningham shared a variety of strategies and scaffolds to support language development in the classroom. The attendees look forward to sharing what they learned with other ESOL and classroom teachers.

ESOL Meeting Thursday, August 11
Mr. Keith Adams, Director of ESOL, led a meeting with all 32 ESOL teachers on Thursday, August 11, 2016 from 8:00 AM -12 noon. The meeting was held at the new curriculum training room behind the new board room. The agenda included introductions, schedules, the corrective action plan, 2015 CCRPI performance targets, technology inventory, ESOL forms and folders, professional learning opportunities, and WIDA website resources.
New ESOL Director for 2016-2017 Mr. Marlon (Keith) Adams
, Ed.S., will lead Colquitt County ESOL teachers as the new ESOL director for the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Adams says, "I am excited to be working with our ESOL program this year. Please know that I am here to help with anything ESOL."
In the 2015-2016 school year our district had 1,115 students enrolled in the ESOL program (11.57% of the total enrollment).
